Brazilian sociologist and anthropologist Gilberto Freyre informs us that before the 19th century Brazil had never seen bread. Before the italian immigrants introduced bread, Brazilians used tapioca and yuca in different ways. The typical bakerys spread throughout the big cities rapidly and today, especially in some neightborhoods of São Paulo, you can still find very typical home made italian bread.
